The Buyer’s Checklist: How to Bid on Used Camera Gear Like a Pro
21 Feb 2026
Used gear can be a bargain — or a pain. Here’s how to bid smarter.
What to check in the listing
- Clear photos of the mount/contacts
- Notes on scratches, haze, fungus
- A list of included accessories
- Confirmation of autofocus and stabilisation (if applicable)
Lens red flags
- “Tiny dust” with no photos
- “A bit stiff” focus ring
- No rear element photo
Body red flags
- Missing hot shoe cover + heavy wear (not always bad, but ask)
- Battery door damage
- Ports shown open but not photographed properly
Before you bid
- Know typical market value
- Decide your max
- Don’t chase it past your limit
If anything feels vague, bid accordingly — or skip it.
